Social Security Numbers no Longer accepted for Export, effective Sept 4th, 2009

U.S. Census Bureau has issued an interrim final rule to end the use of social security numbers for identification when registering and filing electronic export information in the Automated Export System (AES).

Effective Sept 4th, 2009, only an EIN or DUNS number is acceptableas identificaiton. Any businesses or individuals may obtain an EIN through the Internal Revenue Service web site, www.irs.gov or go to the following link http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html

The ruling is being implemented to ensure that a filer's social security number is protected in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974.
